Division 2005 - Hand Spun Yarns

Champion Yarn: $25, First Prize: $10, Second Prize: $7, Third Prize: $3. Entry Fee: $1 per entry per class. Entry Limit: 2 entries per exhibitor per class. Exhibitors limited to Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and San Luis Obispo County residents except for people buying fleece at the Monterey Wool County Fair Wool Show auctions for 1998, 1999, and 2000 and entering yarn made from that fleece (i.e., a fleece bought in 1999 may return as yarn in 2000 and as a garment in 2001).

All skeins shall be at least 25 yards each. It is recommended to use at least three skein ties per shein and they should be loose and non-binding.

Fibers used for these yarns must be spun from wool, mohair, angora, or llama/alpaca, or any cameloid, other mammel or a combination of these fibers. These fibers may have been dyed with natural or chemical dyes. If using natural dyes, the mordant should be specified. Dyed yarns must have been dyed by the exhibitor. Note the type (brand) of dye used. Please note if spun in grease not yet washed. Be as specific as possible as to intended use. It is helpful to the judge if you describe the method of fiber preparation for the yarns. The more information you can give, the more helpful it is for the judge to evaluate your entry. Please attach a small fleece sample to the 3"x 5" label. Also please attach a small swatch (a minimum of 3"x 3") of the completed fabric to the skein.

Division 2006 - Crafted

Champion Yarn: $50, First Prize: $20, Second Prize: $15, Third Prize: $10. Entry Fee: $2 per entry per class. Hand spun yarns entered in this division must meet the criteria of Hand spun Yarns, Division 2005. Entry Limit: 2 entries per exhibitor per class. Entries are also welcomed from neighboring San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Kern, Inyo, Fresno, Tulare, and Kings counties. Exception: Anyone buying fleece at the Monterey Wool County Fair Wool Show auctions in 2002, 2003, and 2004, may also enter an item made from that fleece, regardless of their place of residence. Please attach a small sample of the yarn and of the unspun fiber and attach it to the 3"x 5" label. It is helpful to the judge if you describe the method of fiber preparation for the yarns. The more information you can give, the more helpful it is for the judge to evaluate your entry. In handwoven entries, yarn other than hand spun may be used as non-visible warp only. Visible warp/weft must be of 100% hand spun. For rugs, commercial warp threads may be used, providing they are only visible as fringe or bound warp finish.

Class 17& 18: Items eligible include any which are currently eligible in the crafted division (2006). All items would comprise a single class. All items entered in this class would be judged using the score card appropriate for that item. The item receiving the highest score would be placed first, the item placing second would have the second-highest score, and so forth. In case of a tie, it would be the judge's choice as to the placing.

Teams eligible to enter would include those in which both members live in the geographical area currently eligible to enter Monterey County Fair, using whatever eligible fiber they wanted.
