This study group is open to all guild members. We experiment with all different fiber arts from spinning, weaving, dyeing, jewelry and paper making.

Plans for 2017 (subject to change):

January 7* Tapestry weaving

February 11 Felting (bring thrums)

March 11 Silk fusion (bring thrums)

April 8 Ice dying (bring shirts; consider ordering rayon shawls – Dharma)

May 13 Indigo dying and clamping

June 10 Solar printing (on paper? on fabric?)

July 8 Field trip to Dharma (and, possibly, also to weaving shop – Joan)

August 12 Watch videos?; Sonora field trip?; zen tangles?

September 9 Woad dying

October 14 Barbie’s leaves design hanging

November 11 Rose path weaving (Barb O’Connor)

December 9 Holiday potluck, show & tell, and planning for 2018

Other ideas: rust stamping, natural shibori itajime (Andrea has video), stitching on woven fabric (embellishment), lichen dying, paper crafts, plant weaving, silk screening, thrums


Jan – v-shaped shawl – we will discuss the woven v-shaped shawl as in Anne Field’s book Weaving on the Four Shaft Loom.  A similar pattern appeared in a recent Handwoven.  Andrea has done a version in plain weave on the rigid heddle loom.  It would be great for those who are interested in the project to come with the loom threaded and partially woven.   Andrea will also show us what we will need to have for the silk painting project in Feb.

May – dyeing with soy wax resist, solar dyeing with resist, sun dyeing with cyrro
Jun – saori weaving, pin weaving
Jul – bring your UFOs to work on – especially those from previous study group sessions – but any will be fine.
Aug – ice dyeing at Betsy’s house
Sept – pin weaving at Betsy’s house
Oct – woven book covers/place mats using items from garden – HW May/Jun 2015
Nov – dyeing warp and weft for weaving project
Dec – planning meeting and potluck

December 2015 Meeting:  Social potluck and planning for 216.

November 2015 Meeting: 3rd part of combining weaving and knitting – knitting portion.

October 2015 Meeting: Spinning – different ways to combine yarns into thicker yarns.

September 2015 Meeting: Meeting cancelled.

August 2015 Meeting: Field trip to Tech. Shop.

June 2015 Meeting: surface printing techniques.

May 2015 Meeting: 2nd part of combining weaving and knitting – working on project.

April 2015 Meeting: leaf patterning using bleach solution & rust staining/transfer on cloth for garments .

March 2015 Meeting: warping with multiple colors, Gloria-method

February 2015 Meeting: 1st part of a 3-part activity – combining weaving and knitting in a garment.   Maryanne will also show us her method of combining knitting and weaving on a knitting loom.

January 2015 Meeting: We will make small, post-card sized, embellished cards.

December 2014 Meeting:  We will have our annual holiday potluck brunch and planning for 2015 activities!

October and November 2014 Meetings:  Our topic will be felting.

September 2014 Meeting:  Time to dye!  We will paint yarn/fabric.

August 2014 Meeting: Weaving workshop with Teresa Ruch.

July 2014 Meeting: Ice dyeing with Sue Hans.

June 2014 Meeting: Glass making in Half Moon Bay.

May 2014 Meeting: Time to do some dyeing! Natural dyes. 

April 2014 Meeting: Silk reeling.

March 2014 Meeting: Try out some Anita Mayer techniques.

February 2014 Meeting: We will be making bags for the CNCH 2014 guild display.  

January 2014 Meeting: Patt led us in more Kumihimo braiding, including flat braids and a new button closure technique.
